How to Get Your Business on Google in Nigeria: Maps, Search and Your Online Store

What Nigerian businesses can do to be found on Google: claim a Business Profile if you have a location, build clear product pages and submit your sitemap in Search Console.

The short answer: to get your business found on Google in Nigeria, do three things. First, if you have a shop, office or pickup point customers can visit, claim a free Google Business Profile so you can appear on Google Maps and in local results. Second, give every product its own clear page with a descriptive name, honest description and good photos, so Google has something to show for product searches. Third, tell Google your site exists by submitting its sitemap in Google Search Console. None of this guarantees rankings, and results take weeks or months, but it puts you in the running.

If you need a store with its own product pages to point Google at, you can create a free Webift store.

How people find businesses on Google

Customers use Google in two main ways when they want to buy:

  • Local searches, such as "wig shop in Ikeja" or "cake bakery near me". These show Google Maps results and business listings.
  • Product and information searches, such as "men's linen shirts Lagos" or "how to start a skincare business in Nigeria". These show web pages, shopping results and articles.

Your approach differs depending on whether you have a place customers can visit.

Step 1: Claim your Google Business Profile (if you have a location)

A Google Business Profile is a free listing that can appear in Google Maps and local search. Google's rules require a business to have a genuine physical presence or serve customers in person, for example a shop, an office or a business that travels to customers. A business that only operates through social media and has no place or in-person service usually is not eligible, so check Google's guidelines before you apply.

If you are eligible:

  1. Search for your business on Google Maps to see whether a listing already exists.
  2. Create or claim the profile and complete Google's verification, which may involve a code or a video.
  3. Use your real business name, with no keywords stuffed in.
  4. Choose the most accurate main category.
  5. Add your address or service area, opening hours and phone number.
  6. Add your store link as the website.
  7. Upload clear photos of your shop, products and team.
  8. Reply politely to every review.

Keep your details consistent with what appears on your Instagram, WhatsApp Business profile and store.

Step 2: Ask customers for honest reviews

Reviews help local customers decide whether to trust you. Ask happy customers to leave a review after they have received their order, and make it easy by sharing your listing link. Never buy reviews, offer payment for positive ones or write fake reviews. Google can remove them, and customers can usually tell.

Step 3: Give every product its own page

For product searches, Google needs pages it can understand. A store where each product has its own address, name, description and photos is much easier to find than a chat thread or a single image of a catalogue.

On Webift, each product has its own page, and each store has its own sitemap that search engines can read. Your part is to fill the pages in well:

  • Use a descriptive product name. "Men's olive linen shirt" is better than "Shirt 4".
  • Write a real description. Say what the product is, who it is for, materials, sizes, what is included and how to care for it. Write it in your own words rather than copying a supplier's text.
  • Add clear photos of the actual product.
  • Show the price and keep it current.
  • Put products in sensible categories, such as "Dresses" or "Hair bundles".
  • Remove or archive items you no longer sell, so customers do not land on dead ends.

Step 4: Use words customers actually search for

You do not need keyword tricks. Think about how a customer would describe what you sell, and use those words naturally in names, descriptions and categories. Include the places you serve if it is true and helpful, for example "delivery across Lagos and Abuja". Free tools such as Google's search suggestions (the suggestions that appear as you type) show real phrases people use.

Step 5: Set up Google Search Console

Google Search Console is a free tool that shows how your site appears in Google Search and lets you tell Google about your pages.

  1. Sign in at Search Console with a Google account.
  2. Add your website as a property and verify that you own it. Google offers several ways to verify, and which one you can use depends on how your site is set up and what access you have to it.
  3. Submit your sitemap, the file that lists your pages.
  4. Check the reports for pages Google could not read or chose not to include.

Webift stores have a sitemap at their store address followed by /sitemap.xml. For example, a store at webift.com/yourstore has its sitemap at webift.com/yourstore/sitemap.xml. If you use a custom domain, which is included on the Standard plan, your sitemap is on that domain. Submitting a sitemap tells Google about your pages, but it does not guarantee that Google will index them or rank them.

Step 6: Publish helpful content

Customers search for answers before they buy. A short guide, size chart, care guide or "how to choose" page on your own site can bring in people who are not yet looking for your exact product. This is how many businesses grow search traffic over time. You can host content on your store or share it on social media, and link back to your products.

Step 7: Share your link everywhere

Links from other places help people and search engines find you. Add your store link to:

  • Your Instagram and TikTok bios.
  • Your WhatsApp Business profile.
  • Your Google Business Profile, if you have one.
  • Your email signature and receipts.
  • Directories and partner pages where it is genuinely relevant.

Step 8: Be patient and measure

Search visibility takes time. New pages can take days or weeks to be discovered, and competitive searches take longer. Check Search Console periodically to see which searches show your pages, and improve the pages that get impressions but few clicks.

What not to do

  • Do not buy backlinks or follower packages. They can harm your reputation and are against Google's guidelines.
  • Do not copy supplier descriptions word for word. Duplicate content gives Google little reason to show your page.
  • Do not stuff keywords into names and descriptions.
  • Do not promise customers "number one on Google". Nobody can guarantee that.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put my online-only business on Google Maps?

Google generally requires a physical location or in-person service area for a Business Profile. If you only sell through social media and a store with no place customers can visit, you may not be eligible. Check Google's current guidelines.

How long does it take to appear on Google?

It varies. New pages can take days or weeks to be found and longer to build visibility. Nobody can promise a specific ranking.

Do I need a website to appear on Google?

A website gives Google pages it can show for product searches. A store with individual product pages is a strong starting point. See how to create a business website in Nigeria.

Does Webift guarantee I will rank on Google?

No. Webift gives each store its own product pages and a sitemap that search engines can read, but rankings depend on many things, including your content, your competition and Google's own decisions.
